Uncle Ryuuzaki's Not-As-Planned Weekend

Misa steps into the room with L following. He is now quite a bit shorter than her.

He flops down on the sofa. After he's situated, he stares at her with big, dark eyes.

"I know I can still read books, but Misa, would you read to me later?"

He has been trying to hide his fear from most of the adults he's encountered, to greater or lesser degrees of success, but he doesn't feel like he needs to hide it from her.

[[This thread is private to [livejournal.com profile] firm_detective and [livejournal.com profile] misamisal for now; if you want in, you know the drill. I wouldn't be surprised if [livejournal.com profile] justiceishot dropped by at some point, for example.

L has stumbled into an age-reversal room on accident, and is now 8 years old. He is 4'5" tall, weighs about 55 lbs, and has a face that is all eyes. He is expressive of a few emotions, but makes transparent attempts to cover most of them. His speech is more "British" than it is as an adult, and has lost some of its other characteristic patterns. The overall impression he gives is that of a bright little boy who may sometimes be both too serious and too calculating for his age.

His memories are jumbled. He knows who most of the people in the Mansion are, but very few details of the Kira case. Things that happened more than about a week ago feel far away in his memory, while things that happened in early childhood are more present. He is right around the age he was when he met Watari, and as such, is more inclined to miss his parents.

His feelings towards Misa are also different: he has a strong preference for her, but it's a child's love for a favorite adult.]]

::she smiles brightly as she approaches him, bringing him his laptop computer::
Of course, I'd love to. ^__^ Any certain story?

::she sets the laptop on the coffe table in front of him, then sits beside him, crosslegged::

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-07 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Um, maybe... "The Purloined Letter"? It's by Edgar Allan Poe.

*He stares at the floor, before looking at her and admitting,*

I'm afraid, Misa. There are bad people here. That man Light from last week -- he was mean to me. I don't care about that, but I do care about why. Pink-san says he kills people.

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-07 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, Edgar Allan Poe. A truely great artist. ::she smiles at him:: I didn't know you liked his work.

::she watches him carefully, listening to his words, concern. Gently, she wraps her arm around his sholder, pulling him close to her, she leans against him gently::
Don't worry, darling. He can't hurt you. Besides, if he ever tried, I'd be all over him before he'd even get close to you. I'll protect you, okay? And so with just about everyone else here in the Mansion. Besides, he can't kill anyone here. ::she gently ruffles his hair, smiling down at him affectionately, as if he were her little brother:: Okay?

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-07 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I like Monsieur Dupin.

*His French accent is surprisingly good; he doesn't need to take any care at all to pronounce the name correctly. His father was French.*

"The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is better than "The Mystery of Marie Roget," but "The Purloined Letter" is the best of all of them. I like Sherlock Holmes, too.

*Leaning against her, he nods, at first uncertainly, then with more assurance.*

He doesn't even know where the room is. It's pretty hard to find, but we have to keep it that way, right?

Misa, I don't want you to get hurt protecting me.

*He continues to cling to her.*

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-07 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
::she giggles at his french accent:: That's a really good french accent you've got there. ^__^

::she strokes his hair comfortingly::
I know, I don't want you to get hurt trying to protect me either, but I know you would do anything to protect me. Just as I would do anything to protect you. I love you very much.

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-07 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
*He looks pleased at the compliment.*

My dad was French. He taught me. He and Mum met at a university there.

*He hugs around her waist.*

I love you too, Misa. You're not gross like other girls, you're cool. And you're right -- I wouldn't let Light hurt you, either.

*He frowns.*

Has he tried before? Some other way, like?

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-07 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
::she smiles, genuinely interested:: Really? That's wonderful. What was your mother?

::she sighs softly, a bit of a rueful look on her face:: Well, not that particular Light, but the Light in my world had hurt me, yes. ::she stares ahead of her, remembering:: He was very cruel, but...I thought he cared for me and was just having a tough way of showing it. It turned out he didn't, he just really didn't care. I wasn't part of his plans.
::she smiles down at him now:: But that's okay, because I have you now. And I know where you stand regarding your feelings for me. And you sweet and kind.

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-07 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
My mum was... my mum. She studied Philosophy. She liked Bertrand Russell. She spent a lot of time working on her diss-er-ta-tion.

Um, the other grown-ups in the kitchen said you're my girlfriend. I know -- *he concentrates* -- that means we live together now. Are we going to get married? I think if I ever got married, I'd want to marry you. But you're too old.

*He nestles against her.*

Can we have hot cocoa, now?

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
::she smiles, listening to him talk about his mother:: She sounds nice.

::she laughs at this:: I'm not too old, you know. Legally, I'm not even allowed to drink yet. Though, at the moment, we are a little over ten years apart in age.
::she flushes slightly at the mention of marriage:: I'm not sure. We...haven't really talked about it. Of course, I'd love to marry you, it would be wonderful...::she thinks about the prospect, smiling softly::...perhaps, in the future...You know, I always had this fantasy about getting married on a cliff side, either at sunrise or sunset, and it would just be me, my future husband, and the priest...::she shakes her head realizing she's rambling a bit:: Ah, but, like I said, we haven't really talked about it. Really, I'm just so glad to have found someone as wonderful as you. ::she squeeses him in a hug::

Yes, of course. :) We have marshmellows, too. Would you like some in your hot cocoa?

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
*He blinks.*
Yes, she was nice. That was what Light tried to make me feel bad about -- my mum. He tried to make it sound like his mum was better because she didn't die, and like -- I would die too, because not having a mum would make me feel like I couldn't do anything right. But none of it is true. It's nobody's fault my mum died. It was an electrical fire.

*After listening to Misa's description of the wedding ceremony she envisions, he takes his forefinger out of his mouth, where he has been nibbling on its tip, then says,*

On a cliff... wouldn't that be dangerous?

*He blushes.*

I'm happy you like me, too, Misa.

Marshmallows would be good.

*He leans forward and opens the laptop computer.*

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
::her expression is sad now:: I'm so sorry...I know how it feels, though. I lost my parents, too.

::she giggles:: Well, not a cliff like one see's in cartoons, with the earth crumbling from beneath it. More like...well, like a small mountain, over looking the ocean, with lots of flowers and trees surrounding the area. But, in the fall, so there aren't as many bees or other bugs. ^__^;

::she stands, gently ruffling his hair, then crosses the room to the kitchenette area and sets to work making the hot cocoa. She pours milk into two mugs then sticks them in the microwave for a couple of minutes and busys herself getting the packets of cocoa, straws, and spoons from the cupboard. Once the microwave finishes, she adds in the power, stirring, then drops a few marshmellows in each mugs. She brings them back over to the couch and holds one out to L::
Here you go. Careful, though, it may be a bit too hot at the moment.

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
*He frowns.*

Yes, I know. How long ago? I think mine died two years ago. Are you still as sad as you were then?

*His head tilts to the side as he listens to her description.*

That sounds pretty, Misa, but why the ocean?

*As he waits for her to finish the cocoa, the laptop powers on, and he looks at the files on the desktop. One is labelled MONKEY, and was not there before his age-reversal.*

*He accepts the mug of cocoa, and stirs it carefully, watching the marshmallows melt.*

Thanks. Can you show me the mystery games, now?

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
::she nods:: Two years ago, hmm? That must have been hard on you.
Mine passed away about three years ago, when I was 16. Though, it's almost four years now...no, I'm not as sad as I was then. It still hurts, though... ::she gaze is fixed off in the distance, the memory flashing before her eyes:: ...it's just...difficult...to have to remember that I couldn't save them...

::she smiles at him:: Well, I've never been to the ocean before, and I love natural bodies of water. I've seen streams, creeks, even lakes, but never the ocean. I always imagined after the ceremony, my husband and I would walk on the sand near the water...I always wanted to collect shells there and toss starfish back into the water. Plus, the waters waves are controlled by the moons gravitational pull. I've always loved the moon, and I think it would make me feel closer to it.

::she smiles at the file labeled Monkey::

Sure, but weren't you going to show me your program first? I'm excited to see it. ^__^

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
You couldn't save them? Because...? *He concentrates again, trying to remember why, and it eventually comes to him.* Oh.

I don't want you to be sad, Misa.

*He stares at her, but does not attempt to hug her.*

I haven't been to the beach in a long time, but I think it was fun. I didn't have to wear shoes.

*When she mentions his program, he becomes visibly more excited, though he tries to cover it.*

Yes, um.

*He leans over, clicking the file. An emulation screen pops up -- this file is circa 1987-88, after all -- and in it, a full-screen design depicting a monkey on a background of trees appears. The animation only lasts about a second and a half, but the monkey lopes across the screen, from one edge to another. It had been an exercise in observation, as well as programming, and it had taken him several days of after-school time to complete. He wasn't told until much later that it had been expected to take him several weeks.*

*He turns to Misa, proud, and says,*

Did you like it?

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
::her eyes are wide in awe:: Oh wow! That's amazing! ^__^ How long did it take you to do this?

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
*He's pleased that she liked it: she's the adult he most wants to delight and impress. Not, in this case, simply to gain some power over her, but because she has power over him.*

Just a couple of days, like. I had to make all the screens and then write a program that would play them like a movie. It was easy, though.

Can you show me the games now?

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
::she continues to stare in awe at it, then hugs him:: It's wonderful, I really like it. ^__^

Sure! Bring up the internet and go to www.escapetheroomgames.net, then we'll go from there.

((ooc: lol, I'm at the website right now. :D XD))

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
The Internet?

*He frowns.*

I think it's....

*He looks at the desktop, where a file is helpfully labelled "Internet." He clicks on it, and when the browser starts, he finds a place to type, then goes to the site.*

[[what, not lazylaces.org or nordinho? i haven't been to either of those in aaaages. :( He's in a 1988 headspace, so he doesn't remember the Internet as well as he should.]]

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
::she smiles:: Okay, the point and click games, and the escape the rooms games are the ones you'll want to choose from. Some are better than others. There's two cute ones that are a little rough on translation, but really nicely done otherwide. They're called Poco Escape and Poco Escape 2, and they're both in the Point and Click area.

((ooc: LOL Some of the Nordinho ones are on this site, though I'm not sure about lazylaces. I don't know if I've ever actually been to that one! I'll have to check it out. ^__^))

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Are they really easy? I only want the hard ones, Misa.

*He selects the box labelled Poco Escape 2, then takes a sip of his cocoa, which has cooled enough to drink. A line of the foam lingers on his upper lip when he's done.*

So I follow the arrows and look around this room, right?

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
::she smiles::
Oh, I love this one. ^__^

Yep, and you can click on different parts to see behind things, under them, and collect items to use on other items in the rom to advance.

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
*Sipping at his cocoa, he clicks around the room for a minute, looking under and behind everything, finding kernels of corn, badges with animals on them, a screwdriver, and other items, as well as a calendar and a set of diagrams. Within a few minutes, he has the matryoshka dolls displayed on the picture, and not long after that, the bear is repaired and his character has escaped from the room through the window.*

*When he finishes, he frowns at the screen, as if to say Is that all there is?, then turns a serious face to her.*

It's easy, Misa, but not too easy. Do you know any that are more of a challenge, like?

[[ooc - yeah, he was going to say that about any of them. I had fun playing it! I'm not sure he'll be satisfied until he's rewritten MOTAS, though.]]

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
::she smiles brightly as he quickly moves through all the steps::
Hmm, well, there's another one that's a bit more difficult. I haven't finished it yet. ::she points it out to him on the screen::
Try this one.

((ooc: lol. :D Here's the link to this one. http://www.escapetheroomgames.net/view/503/Escape-Logic.htm Oooo, MOTAS! I've not played with one, I don't think. lol I'm going to do that. ^__^))

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
*He plays through it in a few minutes, finishing his cocoa.*

That was still easy, but maybe not as easy. I like that you had to make more things happen, like cutting the carpet. You have to look around everywhere in situations like that.

Is there anything harder, or do you want to read now?

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
::her mouth is agape, then she looks to L, then back at the screen, than back at L with a wide grin. She wraps her arms around him and squeezes:: That was AMAZING! You're so smart! ^__^

Well, there are harder ones, but what would you like to do? I'm find with either one. :)

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
*He lets himself be hugged without stiffening, which would have been unusual for him when he actually was this age; he wasn't an affectionate child.*

I'd like to try one of the really hard ones, Misa, if there are any.

*He blinks, then tries and fails to stifle a yawn.*

[[He's addicted to enigmas, so if Misa does not put her foot down, he will probably be there until he passes out from sheer exhaustion.]]

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
((ooc: lol okay. I wanted to do one more that I could never figure out, but I can't find it now. I think it may have been removed, but it was a prison of some sort... anyway, let's just skip ahead. If I find it later, I'll let you know. :P))

Well, we can come back to the escape games later. How about I read to you now?

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
*He looks disappointed, but it passes; after brief hesitation, he nods.*

All right. Do you have the book?

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
::she nods:: Yes, i believe I have a Poe book on the shelf in the bedroom. Let's go see if that story is in it.
::she stands, taking their cups to the sink, filling them with water to soak, then enters the bedroom, picking the Poe book off the shelf and flipping to the table of contents::

Hmm...ah, good! It's in here. ^__^

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
*While she stops at the sink, he goes into the bedroom and flops on the bed, waiting.*

Should I get ready to go to sleep?
Edited 2008-09-10 23:08 (UTC)

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
::she smiles and nods:: That's a good idea. Let's get ready to go to sleep, then I'll read, okay?

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
*He brushes his teeth in the bathroom, but when he's finished, he isn't sure what to do. He stands at the foot of the bed, fidgeting and shifting back and forth on his feet -- right, then left, then right again.*

Um, Misa, do I have any pajamas?

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
::she thinks a moment:: Hmm...well, let's check the closet and see if the mansion has provided anything for us. If not, you can always wear one of my tee-shirts. They may be a bit big on you, but not too bad, you'll be under blankies.

::upon opening the closet, there's a pair of childs pajamas right in the front::
Oh, look!

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
*A little sigh of relief escapes his lips. He steps into the closet and changes his clothing quickly, then steps out and crashes onto the bed again. The pajamas are very plain: they look like something that the Mansion keeps in stock for child forms of Near.*

*Large, dark eyes full of anticipation, he picks up a section of the blanket, twisting it between his fingers.*

I'm ready for the story.

*He seems excited. It isn't that he couldn't read it himself -- he could, and has, a number of times -- it's that he seldom has this much of an adult's attention.*

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
::she smiles brightly:: Okay. But first, I'm going to leave the book with you while I get ready for bed.

::she grabs her favorite nightgown, the cotton, victorian looking white one with little red roses that reaches her calves, then hurries into the bathroom. Behind the door, she changes, brushes her teeth, washes her face, then re-emerges and climbs into the bed::

Okay, all set then? ::she pulls the covers over her and L, tucking him in gently, then picking up the book::

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
*He rests against the pillows, his arms folded over the blankets, and he looks up at her. He blinks, and yawns a little.*

Yes, all set.

*He rolls over onto his side, facing her, curling up with his fist under his cheek.*

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
::scooching down, she lays with her head proped up against the pillow, the book open so he can see the words as well and begins reading::

::By the time she's finished, she yawns, quite sleepy. She turns to him, smiling, and says softly:: I rather enjoyed that story.

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
*He returns the smile, but it's obvious that he's barely awake. He rubs his eyes with his small fist.*

I did, too. Did you expect that the letter would be hidden where it was?

*A long yawn.*

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
::she shakes her head:: No, but it's a very good idea. :)

::after setting the book on her nightstand, she turns over, facing him, her hands under her cheek against the pillow::
I'm tired. Shall we go to sleep now?

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
*He thinks, then gives three quick nods.*

Yes, I'm sleepy too.

*He shifts around in the blankets until he's comfortable, still on his side, with his thumb at his lips, then closes his eyes, but does not fall asleep.*

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
::she curls up next to him, not exactly touching him, but close enough so she can watch him. It's amazing to see him as a child, and it gives her a sence of longing, wishing she had grown up with him. But, at least she's got this time with him, and that's good enough. She smiles softly at his face, snuggling farther under the covers and letting out a soft sigh of comfort::

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Um, Misa?

*he murmurs, without opening his eyes.*

Will you hold my hand until I fall asleep?

*He sounds small, and hopeful.*

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
::she smiles even wider, thinking how sweet he is::
Of course.

::she takes his hand in her, threading their fingers together::

Would you like me to sing to you, too?

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
*He opens his eyes, regards her intently.*

Okay. I really want you to.

*His eyelids droop closed again. Even at this age, there are shadows around them, on his pale, translucent skin.*

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
::quietly, she begins to hum a soft, relaxing song as her thumb gently strokes his hand::

[identity profile] firm-detective.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
*The humming makes him feel very safe: no one has done this in an indescribably long time, and he's sure that Misa will watch over him for as long as it's necessary. Smiling, he relaxes and begins to doze off, with tiny twitches as his body adjusts to sleep.*
Edited 2008-09-12 02:03 (UTC)

[identity profile] misamisal.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
::she continues to watch him, humming softly until he's asleep. She gently presses a soft kiss to his hand, then whispers::
Goodnight my little angel.

::soon after, her eyelids become to heavy to resist and she falls asleep as well.::

((ooc: Also, AAAAAAAAAAAWWWWW. XD))
